BULLS Connected Bike - The future of smart cycling

The interaction of future-oriented mobility and state-of-the-art data technology create the BULLS Connected Bike. In close cooperation with project partners ESB and BMZ, BULLS is building the fully linked E-Bike of the future based on the model series BULLS E-Stream Evo, BULLS Sturmvogel E Evo and Green Mover Lacuba Evo, available as of 2017.

An onboard unit integrated in the rechargeable battery, equipped with a processor, Bluetooth interface, motion sensor, GPS and SIM module, forms the core of an entirely new form of interaction of connectivity and mobility. The owners of an Evo-model can easily and quickly retrofit the Connected-Bike technology by replacing the special rechargeable battery.

State-of-the-art chip technology and most sophisticated sensors, in combination with an exclusive user app, permit, among others, an entirely new form of theft protection, automatic dispatch of a emergency call in case of accident and proactive service with remote diagnosis and location-independent software updates - all of this connected to a special premium E-Bike that impresses with its unique equipment and ergonomic features.

Sensors analyse wear and cycling situation

Thanks to its integrated sensors, the Connected Bike is able to interpret cycling situations. Unusually strong deceleration, connected to a slant of the bike, may suggest an accident. When this case is recognised, the system will send a query to the rider. If the rider does not react, a emergency message including the location will be sent to an emergency contact specified in advance. In particular in remote regions, the cyclist can thus be found and taken care of quickly. Additionally, the sensors permit conclusions to pending maintenance work.

All vital data on the bicycle can be called up at any time by remote diagnosis. Battery charge status, number of charge cycles, general cycling output and many measured values provide information on the condition of the bike – a service that is important not only for private users but in particular for fleet operators. Thus, drive inspections or possible exchange of the rechargeable battery can be comfortably planned in advance.

Overview of the most important function:

Once arrived at the destination, the rider can activate the protection mode in the App – the theft protection of the Connected Bike is armed and the drive is deactivated. If the sensors recognise permanent acceleration, connected to increase of the distance from the location, a message will be sent to the connected Smartphone along with position data. The user can pass the position on to the police.

Automatic emergency call

Equipped with a large number of sensors, the BULLS Connected Bike interprets the current cycling situation. If the speed suddenly drops to zero and the bike is resting on its side, the system will register a possible accident. If the rider does not react to the message that a emergency call is imminent, it will be sent to the emergency contact specified in the App without delay, including location data. This function offers additional safety in particular for E-Mountainbikers on off-road tours.

Cockpit with integrated navigation

The Connected Bike combines cycling information with navigation on the Smartphone. Thanks to the Control Dashboard, the cyclist can keep an eye on all the relevant data, such as support level, remaining range and cycled kilometres, at any time. Additionally, among others, information on the weather situation can be called up. At the same time, the integrated turn-by-turn navigation ensures that the cyclist will reach his destination safely. Completed routes can be saved and shared at any time.

Complete Social-Media-connection

The Connected Bike wouldn't be complete without its interface to the world of social media. Cyclists are able to communicate cycling results, tours and routes directly via Facebook, Twitter & Co. while at the same time participating in Social-Media campaigns and events. Comprehensive training control will be available in a later development level.

Proactive service

The service app informs the user by remote diagnosis not only about the battery charge status, but also about any pending maintenance work. The integrated deceleration sensor, which warns about exchange of total wear parts such as the brake linings, in time, is a highlight in this context. For this, diagnosis data such as cycling performance and the number of charge cycles can be viewed in the App at any time - an important service for private customers and in particular for fleet operators.

Maximum training control

A finely adjustable pedalling support makes the Connected Bike a gym on wheels at the same time. This technology is particularly strong in the scope of healthy stamina training. Perfect training control is provided by specially processed cycling data that provide a precise overview of scope and performance.

The Connected Bike is expected to be available in late 2017. Integration of the on-board unit makes it possible to convert any model with an integrated Evo-battery into a Connected Bike by simply replacing the rechargeable battery.

Therefore, we are not using costly hardware in our systems, as a large touch display, high-performance CPU and enough memory would require.

The Connected Bike works with any Smartphone on iOS and Android basis with the current operating system.

The App uses the data volume of your mobile phone contract while no WiFi is available, e.g. to navigate or call information from the database. The SIM module enables the E-Bike to send or receive data to and from the cloud without a connected Smartphone. In order to increase performance and reduce costs, the system is designed so that it will use the Smartphone for data connection when possible.

Continuous availability of the features leads to increased power demand of the rechargeable battery in standby. To give you a fully charged battery even after an extended storage time, we have enclosed a special charge maintenance charger for you. Please charge your Connected Bike's battery with the enclosed charger during longer storage periods and in particular in winter.

Your site, time of the incident and your contact data

The emergency call will inform a person specified by you. We advise against alarming the rescue forces, since it is possible that the emergency call will be triggered even though no help is needed or due to lack of attention or a false alarm.

When the system recognises an accident. This is a combination of the measured values from several sensors. For example, if the speed is suddenly reduced and the acceleration sensors find that the E-Bike slants.

Since it is not necessary to send an emergency call after every accident, you have 30 seconds time to cancel the emergency call in the App.

If you have set the theft mode to automatic, every time the Smartphone loses connection to your E-Bike.

You will be informed when someone is manipulating your E-Bike and moving it. If the E-Bike is moving away from its site, the system will send you the current location every 30 seconds until you leave theft mode.

Together with activation of the theft mode, the drive is deactivation. If your E-Bike falls into the wrong hands, it will be deactivated. You must unlock it again in the APP.n.

Your E-Bike has a mid-engine with smoothly running free-wheels. For technical reasons, a mid-engine cannot be blocked or braked, as a hub motor would.

Of course, even GPS monitoring and deactivation of the drive cannot protect your E-Bike from thieves. Combined with a good bicycle lock, however, the probability that the thief will fail or that you can recover your E-Bike after the fact increases.
